Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to make it to the final table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Gus won a huge pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest bettors in the world. While playing net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He frequently participates in the 200/400 No Limit max buy in of $40, 000. Hansen generally buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then goes all-in. I know Gus is an outstanding poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is broke, he has no reason to settle at the game with the min buy in.
Buying in for the min takes a majority of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the best players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total dollar value. I think tv can skew our view of the real world every now and then. The best players in the world could be players you have never heard about. Gus can be seen participating in web poker on Full Tilt.
