In Texas Holdem, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a specific sum of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the frequently used term for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the cards and gives out 2 cards face down to each player. A normal deck of 52 playing cards is used. After the deal, there is the initial round of wagering. This sequence is typically known as a "pre-flop".

Following the first betting sequence, the top card of the deck is discarded. This discarded card is called the "burn card", and this is done to ensure there is no fraudulent activity. The following three cards are then revealed face up on the table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now comes a 2nd round of wagering, after that the dealer burns another card and turns over 1 more card onto the table. Following this, competitors can employ the 6th card to form a 5card poker hand.

Another sequence of wagering happens, and in many styles of poker, here is where the wager amount doubles. There is another round of burning a card, and a final placing of a card face-up on the poker table. This is called the "river". Bettors can now employ any of the 5 cards on the board, and/or the two cards that they are holding, to create a 5card poker hand.

To finish it up there’s a further round of wagering. After that, all the players left start to show their hands. This is called the "showdown". Clearly, the competitor who shows the highest hand wins. When players have equal hands a splitting of the pot is used.

Hold’em is a very easy game to pickup, but to acquire knowledge one needs a large amount of studying.
