After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play many hours and don’t win most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. He had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
