Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved betting on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The real improvement in his game happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
