His papa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to learn anything he could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative feedback from others kill his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
He began playing intently after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a teaching experience and winning was not a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and an immeasurable passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every single day and is incredibly humble about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and always strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
