Stu is thought to be by many to the greatest NL Hold em Poker player ever.
The three time World Poker Champion was born in New York in ‘53 and began wagering poker before reaching his teens.
The young gambler began wagering gin and at the age of ten had won his very first gin rummy tournament, while on vacation with his parents. By the time he turned fourteen the small poker maestro had turned pro and stopped going to school.
In ‘54 Stu Ungar entered the history books by winning ten thousand dollars in a gin tournament without dropping a single hand, a record which still stands in New York these days.
The fast speaking wiz kid has been likened, in poker terms, to sporting greats like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Stu had a real skill for playing poker but despite his achievements in Texas hold’em poker, he preferred wagering gin.
Stu once said that there might a number of day be a far better No Limit Texas hold em gambler than him but he could not see how anyone could ever be a better gin gambler.
In 1980 Stu Ungar was put on the world map as one of the greatest Hold’em Poker gamblers in the world when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the very first time. Amazingly it was the first time he had played in the tournament.
The right after year he dismissed any suggestions that it had been a fluke, by effectively defending his crown. And in 1997 Stu set the record by succeeding his third World poker championship.
But this poker master also fought with substance abuse and a year after winning his 3rd title Stu Ungar past away in his hotel room. According to medical doctors, he had passed away from a cardiac event which was triggered by his lifestyle.
Stu had started out with practically nothing but his skill and expertise for the game which made this poker fantastic a millionaire a lot of times over.
